Eru Frakkar gersamlega að tapa sér?

Mikið vona ég nú að bandaríkjahatur friðarsinna á Íslandi sé ekki komið svona langt.

Það er aldeilis að sumir Frakkar gera sér grein fyrir sögu landsins og hverjum þeir mega þakka frelsi sitt.

In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a “Left-Handed Whopper” specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, “many others requested their own ‘right handed’ version.”

Baseball!!!

markprior.jpgVúhúúúú!! Baseball tímabilið byrjar á morgun. Eru ekki allir spenntir?? Ég veit að ég er allavegana hrikalega spenntur.

Mitt lið, Chicago Cubs er með nýjan þjálfara, Dusty Baker, sem kom San Fransisco Giants í World Series í fyrra. Margir eru bjartsýnir á það að Cubs verði mun betri í ár en í fyrra. Sumir blaðamenn telja meira að segja að þeir gætu komist alla leið í úrslitin.

Helsti styrkur Cubs eru nátturulega frábærir kastarar. Hópur fimm aðalkastarana er sennilega einn sá besti í allri deildinni og ekki skemmir að fjórir þeirra eru mjög ungir. Þetta eru Kerry Wood, Mark Prior (sem margir telja að gæti orðið næsta súperstjarnan í deildinni, sjá mynd), Matt Clement, hinn örvhenti Shawn Estes og hinn efnilegi Venezuela búi Carlos Zambrano.

Það er þó ljóst að til þess að liðið komist langt þá þarf sóknin að geta eitthvað. Ekki er nóg að snillingurinn Sammy Sosa hitti 50 home run einsog vanalega. Moises Alou þarf að leika mun betur en í fyrra og svo verða Cubs að treysta á að efnilegu byrjunarmennirnir þrír, Hee Seop Choi, Corey Patterson og Bobby Hill leiki mjög vel.

Þetta verður ábyggilega spennandi tímabil en ég verð því miður að fylgjast með því í gegnum netið í stað þess að geta farið á leiki einsog í fyrra. Öllum leikjunum er lýst á netinu og svo er eftir leiki hægt að nálgast vídeó með helstu atriðunum úr leikjunum. Annars er ein skemmtilegasta leiðin til að fylgjast með þessu öllu saman, bloggsíðan Cubs Reporter.

Að hata Ameríku?

Margir hafa ásakað Michael Moore og fleiri gagnrýnendur Bandaríkjastjórnar um að hata Bandaríkin, sem er náttúrulega fáránleg staðhæfing. Ég rakst á þessi ummæli á Metafilter, skrifuð af þessum notenda

[Moore] loves America. He loves it so much that he is willing to point out its flaws, to try to get it to understand how it could be a better country, to get it to change. He sees the both the best and the worst in it, unflappingly. He is willing to say what he believes is true not because he hates America, but because he wants so badly for it (us) to be the Country it could be – to see the promise of liberty and prosperity and justice and honor fulfilled, to the fullest extent possible.

The recent rhetoric from the pro-Bush “how dare you criticize this wonderful country that has given you so much” viewpoint makes me crazy. In my book, its the people who are willing to hide their heads in the sand, who say simply that America is Great and Right who will eventually destroy this country, not the truth-speakers or the protesters. Is America actually so weak that we can no longer tolerate dissent? Are Michael Moore and a half million protesters going to make the republic fall?

After all, who loves you more? The person who only says “you’re great” no matter what you do, or the person who says “you have spinach on your teeth” or who urges you to be a better person, to try harder, to work harder, to meet your full potential?

Stórfyrirtæki skipuleggja mótmæli

Í kjölfar allrar umræðunnar, sem var hérna á Íslandi um áhrif viðskiptalífsins (og þá sérstaklega einkarekinna fjölmiðla) á stjórnmálin í landinu, þá er nýjasti pistill Paul Krugman athyglisverður

Svo virðist sem Clear Channel, sem á 1200 útvarpsstöðvar í USA hafi skipulagt fjölda mótmæli með stríðinu við Írak. Eigendur fyrirtækisins eru víst ágætis vinir GWB.

There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear, but a good guess is that we’re now seeing the next stage in the evolution of a new American oligarchy. As Jonathan Chait has written in The New Republic, in the Bush administration “government and business have melded into one big `us.’ ” On almost every aspect of domestic policy, business interests rule: “Scores of midlevel appointees . . . now oversee industries for which they once worked.” We should have realized that this is a two-way street: if politicians are busy doing favors for businesses that support them, why shouldn’t we expect businesses to reciprocate by doing favors for those politicians ? by, for example, organizing “grass roots” rallies on their behalf?

What makes it all possible, of course, is the absence of effective watchdogs. In the Clinton years the merest hint of impropriety quickly blew up into a huge scandal; these days, the scandalmongers are more likely to go after journalists who raise questions. Anyway, don’t you know there’s a war on?

SUS-arinn ég?

Hmmm…. hvað í ósköpunum hef ég gert af mér til að verðskulda það að vera kallaður Sus-ari á þessari síðu?? (á lista yfir blogg vinstra megin)

Rosalega er komin mikil reiði í skrif Sverris Jakobssonar. Hann er svo reiður að hann fellur í þann fúla pytt að fara að uppnefna menn. Það er aldrei sniðugt.

Annars er bara eitt, sem fer dálítið í pirrurnar á mér þegar ég les síðuna hans, sem ég geri alloft. Það er að hann vísar nánast aldrei í greinarnar, sem hann er að mótmæla. Ég skil ekki almennilega af hverju hann gerir það ekki. Til dæmis í dag þá er hann að skjóta á einhverja hægrimenn, sem eru að verja viðbjóðinn Augusto Pinochet (ha ha!!, ég uppnefndi Pinochet, en hann á það líka skilið). Ég hefði nefnilega áhuga á að vita hvaða menn eru að verja gjörðir hans, eða gera lítið úr illvirkjum hans. Hvers konar rökræðuþrot eru menn komnir þegar þeir reyna að draga úr voðaverkum harðstjórans frá Chile. Mér dettur í hug að þetta sé eitthvað tengt því að einhver hafi verið að verja Bandaríkjamenn, en ég veit ekki (getur einhver bent mér á þessi skrif).

Jamm, það minnir mig á það. Það er alveg fáránleg einföldun að segja að bandaríska leyniþjónustan hafi komið Pinochet til valda. Og hananú!

Those of us who have opposed this war need to recognize that we lost the debate, not only in the halls of the White House but also in the court of public opinion as well. It’s time to move on.

We all share President Bush’s hope that ousting Saddam will transform Iraq into a flourishing democracy and revive the Middle East. Here are two principles that may help us improve the chances of winning the peace in Iraq:

First, make this an Arab victory.

As the Pakistani scholar Hussain Haqqani has noted, there’s a flaw in the idea that invading Iraq will lead to a new Arab dawn: for the last 700 years, Muslims have reacted to defeat not by embracing modernism but by turning inward and grasping religious fundamentalism. On the other hand, the greatest reform in any Muslim country in the last century came in Turkey after a rare victory, when Kemal Ataturk defeated the Greeks and foiled Western plans to carve up his country.

That suggests that we should make the outcome in Iraq seem, as much as possible, like a victory for Iraqis, and we should put them in charge quickly. There is a way to engineer this: Shiites make up about 60 percent of Iraqis but have historically been politically repressed and economically impoverished, so if we allow them their fair share of power, this will be a genuine and historic triumph for them.

Second, don’t mess with Iraq’s oil

Everywhere I have been in the Arab world over the last year, people have been deeply cynical about American motives, assuming that we’re just after Iraqi oil. Unless we want to give anti-Americanism a huge boost and create tremendous hostility within Iraq that would make our occupation untenable, we won’t covet Iraq’s oil ? it’s just not worth it. Having harmed America’s image in the runup to this war, let’s restore it in the aftermath.

Ungfrú Vesturland

Ja hérna, ég rakst á þessar myndir af keppendum í Ungfrú Vesturland í gegnum batman.is.

Það er nokkuð ljóst að þessi ljósmyndari á ekki mikla framtíð fyrir sér í fyrirsætuljósmyndun. Myndirnar eru teknar á einhverju safni og það er einn líkast því að stelpurnar eigi að vera algert aukaatriði. Til dæmis er þessi stelpa að þvælast inná mynd af þessu fallega stýri.

Og þessi stelpa sést hreinlega ekkert á myndinni. Ég á allavegana erfitt að gera upp við mig hvort hún sé sæt eða ekki. Mér sýnist hún þó vera sæt.

Og hvað er þetta?
